Chapter 36
âNow what, my dear, am I to do with you?â
Saaya didnât bother to answer the question. Instead she strained to find even a tiny crack in the other womanâs will that restrained her. She had met Elders in her time, but none had the kind of power that could even approach what she felt from this woman.
âNothing to say, little girl?â Alicia sat at the foot of the bed and smiled at her. Saaya smiled back and pressed harder. She may as well be pressing against a wall. She narrowed her eyes at Aliciaâs mocking titter.
âCome, child, be still. You are strong, but youâre not that strong. Mind your elders and behave.â
âI would have no trouble behaving were I not restrained for no reason,â Saaya replied.
âFinally she speaks.â Beneath her long white and pale blue dress Alicia crossed her legs and leaned back on one hand. âIâm certain you know that this visit isnât unwarranted.â
âI donât know you,â Saaya said. âIf I have wronged you in some way it was not intentional.â
âOf course you do not know me, nor I you. But I know of you.â Alicia slid a finger through one of her auburn curls and moved it from in front of her face. Despite her obviously ancient age, there was a radiance to her that complimented her youthful presence. Despite her dangerous situation, Saaya found that interesting. Most Elders didnât particularly care about projecting youthfulness. What did that matter to an immortal?
âAnd, your existence is the core of our little problem, the woman went on. âThe fact that I have not heard of the existence of a dampeal in almost a thousand years is exciting. The fact that she decides to enter into a situation in which she does not belong is unfortunate.â
Again she stared at Saaya, then shook her head. âAfter a millennia, a true dampeal. Youâve presented me with quite a dilemma.â
âI do not know why that is,â Saaya replied. âOne of my parents is a vampire, the other a human. What does this matter?â
Alicia frowned at her. âDonât take me for a fool, girl. I know what you are, which is not a lowly skiek. The Ancestor blood in you is strongly present. That those two fools would neglect to see the seriousness of your involvement is amazing yet not surprising. Which leads me back to my quandary. What am I to do with you?â
Saaya wondered what âidiotsâ Alicia spoke of. She figured one of them would have to be that second Hunter that had come after Jelani. She didnât figure Yako for a fool, but Remy certainly fit the description. Who was the second player?
Alicia chuckled. âI can practically see the wheels turning in that pretty little head of yours. If our woman-to-woman session was of a more friendly nature, I would like nothing more than to share with you the stupidity of those with whom Iâve had to surround myself with. As things stand,â she shrugged. âThere are other matters to consider.â
She studied Saaya, pursing her lips till a dimple appeared on her cheek.
